What this tool does

Field of view can be expressed horizontally or vertically, and the horizontal value changes with aspect ratio. This converter translates between formats so you can compare settings correctly; the visual feel can still vary with the game engine and its FOV convention.

How to use it

Type the FOV, say whether it is horizontal or vertical, and choose the source and target ratios. A horizontal FOV of 90° at 4:3 equals about 106.26° at 16:9, because both share the same vertical FOV (73.74°).

How to read the result

A larger FOV shows more of the scene at the sides but makes central objects smaller. The result is geometric (rectilinear projection); some games apply their own scaling, so compare it with the in-game setting.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between horizontal and vertical FOV?

Horizontal measures the visible angle from side to side and vertical from top to bottom. They are linked by the aspect ratio, so the same vertical FOV gives different horizontal values at 4:3 and 16:9.

Is a higher FOV always better?

No. It widens the visible area and the sense of speed, but makes distant objects smaller and can cost performance. Most players pick the value they feel comfortable with.
