What this tool does

Convert decimal units such as GB and TB to binary units such as GiB and TiB. Manufacturers usually advertise decimal capacity, while some operating systems report a binary-based value with a different label, which explains part of the apparent capacity gap.

How to use it

Enter the values requested by the calculator and check the result together with the notes shown below it.

Practical example

Use a realistic example from your own setup to compare scenarios. The result is a reference, not a replacement for manufacturer specifications.

How to interpret the result

Treat the result as an estimate whenever real-world factors are not available to the browser. For hardware, network or safety decisions, verify the relevant technical specifications.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my 1 TB drive show less space in Windows?

Manufacturers use decimal units (1 TB = 10¹² bytes) while Windows shows binary units, so 1 TB is about 931 GiB.

What is the difference between GB and GiB?

1 GB is one billion bytes and 1 GiB is 1,073,741,824 bytes (2³⁰). The “i” marks the binary base.
